All Toggenburg Patrollers are registered members of the National Ski Patrol, having met the entrance and annual training requirements set by the National Ski Patrol.
The Toggenburg Ski Patrol is completely volunteer and self- sustaining. All of our equipment, clothing and medical supplies are provided by the patrollers themselves and funded through various fund-raising activities.
YES, we ski for free, BUT we also:
¨ Pay annual dues of $92.00.
¨ Are obligated to patrol the equivalent of 1 shift per week, averaging 6 hours each, for the full duration of the season.
¨ Have gone through extensive training in:
ü Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) classroom and On-the-Hill Instruction
ü CPR and training in proper use of our two Automatic External Defibrillators (AED)
ü Outdoor Emergency Transportation (Ski and Toboggan) skills
ü Chairlift evacuation
¨ Have spent every Sunday of our candidate “year(s)-in-training” on the slopes (9 to Noon) learning Outdoor Emergency Transportation (Ski & Toboggan) skills and (1:00 - 5:00) applying our classroom Outdoor Emergency Care skills to on-slope conditions.
Note: some candidates complete Outdoor Emergency Transportation one year and Outdoor Emergency Care a second year.
¨ Spent at least 12 - 14 hours retraining for the new season by December 1st.
ALL TO PROVIDE TOGGENBURG MOUNTAIN WINTER SPORTS CENTER WITH THE BEST PROFESSIONAL RESCUE TEAM POSSIBLE!
¨ This season the Patrol has 12 women and 43 men registered with the Patrol. We also have 8 candidates working on their OEC and OET certifications.
¨ Patrollers averaged 102 "on duty" hours per person last season.
WHY DO WE DO IT?
Patrolling provides a new dimension to skiing, a chance to learn and practice Outdoor Emergency Care Skills, improve skiing abilities, an excellent opportunity to meet people who enjoy skiing, be of service to the public, and be part of the Toggenburg community.
